Are you aware of anyone getting closer to a true search - reading and understanding the text like a person would?
I am working with a company, www.sciosystems.com that has artificial intelligence to do just that. Just like a person, the system needs to have some subject matter expertise to understand what is written. So they decided to target reading contracts.

onebox was one of the best things released by Google in the last 12 months. (even if it was a "defensive" product) Alos, it looks like yahoo is following in the footstep of universal search/one box aggressively as well. Do a quick search "plumbers in upland" and you can see the blending of yahoo local and video.yahoo.com in the main search results.
